The Gardens of the Abbaye de la Cambre

OPT-Xavier Claes-Soleil Rouge

Leave behind the trams and traffic of Avenue Louise. Take a vow of silence and follow the winding path through the trees until the 18th-century abbey, pointy 14th-century church, and its terraced gardens and white roses reveal themselves. The abbey was founded in the 12th century and has been the site for refuge, miracles, fires and rebuilding. The 14th-century church shelters a bloody, striking early 16th-century painting of the mocking of Christ. Follow the greenery north to find the Ixelles ponds and Place Flagey, or south to find the open spaces of the Bois de la Cambre.
